Monk Healer, 2nd Profession
I created a new monk char. I just thought i would try it out and I must say, I am pretty comfortable with a monk. I thought it would be a boring class because all you do is hang back and heal. But I am quite impressed with it.
My question is, 2nd profession. I am thinking either w/e/me/n
w for stances but I have read a good monk shouldn't need to use stance.
e/me for energy management as well as the me
n for damage something like ss, but again monks don't do damage because your their too support your party or team.
Also I hear that the monk can pretty much solo farm anywhere? Is this true, for an example, FOW/UW or HM?
Thanks...

Meh, I suck at monking but have been doing it again in RA for this weekend. Went Mo/W for the stances.
Bonnetti's is fun since there's a lot of melee and a lot of them just keep attacking and refueling your energy. I usually throw up prot spirit and bring myself to full health before turning it on.
Helps to have a furious spear as well. Just attack the nearest person in between healing.

/A can be very good for [Return] [Dark Escape] and [Death's Retreat].
It just depends on preference. Try them all out...except /N.
If you're going to PvE, then you don't need defensive stances. Those skill slots would serve better as extra prot/heal/energy management.

By the way, use protection prayers at least as much as healing prayers.

yes use protection prayers as well as heals, they are your energy management, and dont forget to look at the battle. Ive monked for a few years and in my experience Prot > Healing
I see a lot of people saying assassin but things like [return] are useless in pve maybe [dark escape] or [smoke powder defense] but /e or /me are better imo for pve
Ele you get [Glyph of Lesser Energy]
Mesmer you get [Channeling][Leech Signet][Inspired Hex][Power Drain][Hex Breaker] and the get the mantras that reduces damage to you and keep you from getting interrupted,
IMO /Me and seeing how your starting out as a monk, more things are open to you. The mantras will be nice seeing how every monk that starts out that I've known cracks under pressure, so im going to go with mesmer, I think mesmer will work for you better

If this is for PVE Mo/Mes or Mo/ele would prob be your best option
for PVP Mo/war with stances or a Mo/Sin with return

I ran elemental resistance in GvGs before. I laughed pretty hard when dervishes hit me for *only* 70 damage instead of 140.
Then we pushed in their base and I took a billion damage from their archers

Stances on Monks are good balanced stance ,displined stance, shield stance.I got some good advice on The Furies forum about being a Monk healer with stances especially infusing.

If you're starting out as a PvE monk, i'd go /Elementalist just for [glyph of lesser energy]. Then later when you want to try out 55 farming or PvP you should be far enough into the game where you can change your secondary profession on the fly anyways.

Thats another thing, i want to try solo farmming. But your right, no sence doing that until i get up to lvl 20, and by then i'll be able to change my 2nd.
So it comes down to /e or /me, and yes this is the first time monking in both pve, and pvp.
I'll mainly go heal/prot, on the lines of woh with a few prot. skills. Something I am intrested in. I do have a woh monk for pvp. So I know some about monking, but not everything. I heard it can be hard to monk for a team / party at times, but I figured i'll get use too it, and I can test it on my heros and do a few runs.
I am quite happy that I went monk. My first char is a ele/me.

if you dont listen to usrans that have never played monk and think HB is the only good monk skill, you will be solo monking a party of 8 in no time. Divine Ambassador has a guide as a sticky as well good read for monks if you have not alrdy.

Either elementalist or mesmer are a fine secondary. GoLE is pretty useful to a monk though, it lets you use some of the better protection spells for a lower energy cost.
Masamune, now you know why warriors bring a cancel stance for frenzy.

Okay thanks alot, I think i'll go M/E for the time being, as I am checking most of the protection skills consume alot of energy.
However I do kinda like the idea of interrupting and trying to take less dmg from foes.
But again, if your a good enough monk, you should be able to hold your own and try not to pull the argo to yourself but rather to the tanks in that kind of situation.
So I think i'll go m/e for the gole to help me retain some of my energy while healing/protecting.
Hope I made the right choice.
Now I don't want to go unsarn as it's some what of a skill that well you know, takes 1234 and thats it. I am an old school GW player, and would like to goto fow and uw sometime in the game. Is it possible to still solo those places with a hp55 monk?
Or do I need someone else or heros to take along with me to help? I wouldn't mind taking 3 hero necros of sort. As you all know its hard to pug with parties these days considering they want nothing but unsarn or consets. BAH!
I miss the good ole days of UW/FOW runs with people actually using their skills they have to combat down there rather then using a 1234 keys to complete it. LoL.
Again thanks for the replies.

Yea, doing Mo/W is great because you can alternate between your stances and gaurdian, making you have lots of blockage, but return can be helpful too.

My personal favorite is Mo/W
With it you can wield shields and have endure pain as a skill to your disposal, temporarily making your max health higher. And sprint (or rush) if you want to get to the suffering ally fast.
I find that with Mo/R you can have a pet with you and that /can/ be helpful. Again some speed skills like dodge, or my favorite storm chaser which gives energy each time you're hit with ele dmg.
Mo/E has energy storage skills and Aura of restoration which is nice to have depending if you're alone or not.
As said earlier Mo/Me is a nice build.
Well I hope this helps

Endure Pain is Strength based. So you get 90 health for 7 seconds, is it worth it? You also don't need to be /W to hold shields. You still get 8 armour bonus even if you don't hit the requirements for the shield your holding.
I really can't see the use in rush or sprint (also both strength based). In PvE your never too far away from your party members. In PvP you should be looking at surviving and energy management.

I don't know. Your arguements are right, but I only suggested those skills because I use them and to me they are handy.
You have no idea, sometimes people get separated in PvE, its happened a lot to me, so I bring something to accomodate(sp?) that.
